Fact is that most of us do better with structure. We like to think random is better, when in all reality; random is just as organized and structured. Random, according to the Apple Dictionary on my computer, means chosen or made without method or conscious decision. Most times we do not see the decision or method used on the surface. Hence the reason we call it random, but just because we cannot recognize a pattern or rule, doesn’t mean it is random. And in all honesty, we couldn’t be truly random even if we tried.
Ask any web or graphic designer what would happen if no structure existed. A website would be one big mess of overlapping images and text. Structure and rules are what make the stuff of life work. Try arranging items on a page or a desktop without using any rules or structure. You can’t do it. You could start out meaning well and seemingly not using any rules, but in the end you would make your own rules about how something fits into the area.
Take an engineer. If he ignored the structure and rules when making a car, a tractor or a building, the result would be a catastrophe.
Structure is there for a reason. It helps us understand content, provide consistency, and enable systems of life to function. We can’t ignore it even if we wanted to.
It’s a gift.
